The word “Christmas” is a contraction meaning “Christ’s mass”. It is derived from the Middle English ‘Christemasse’ and Old English ‘Cristes mæsse’, a phrase first recorded in 1038. Dutch has a similar word, ‘Kerstmis’ often shortened to ‘Kerst’.
